இவர் மூன்று வயதிலேயே கண்களை இழந்துவிட்டார். தன் மூன்றாவது வயதில், ஒரு தையல் ஊசியை வைத்துக் கொண்டு விளையாடும் போது எதிர்பாராத விதமாக, ஒரு கண்ணில் காயம் ஏற்பட்டது. உரிய மருத்துவம் செய்யாததால் அவரது கண்ணை இழக்க நேரிட்டது. பரிவுக் கண் நோய் காரணத்தினால், அவர் இன்னொரு கண்ணையும் இழக்க நேரிட்டது.
தனது அயராத முயற்சியால், பார்வையற்றவர்கள் தடவிப் பார்த்துப் படிக்க ஏற்ற பிரெய்லி எழுத்தினைக் 1829 ஆம் ஆண்டு கண்டுபிடித்து வெற்றி கண்டார்.
பிரெய்ல் முறையில் ஒன்று முதல் ஆறு புடைப்புப் புள்ளிகளையும் ஓட்டைகளையும் கொண்டு எழுதிய எழுத்துகளை விரல்களை வைத்துத் தடவு தலின் மூலம் இனங்கண்டு கொள்வர்.
